Frequently Asked Questions

You asked, we answer — because your career is our mission.

Why do I need a career coach?

First, maybe you don’t—and you’ve got all the skills and knowledge you need to land your dream job. If so, congratulations! For some people, they lean on their parents or a mentor to help with this process—which is also great and useful. But, for most of us, searching for a job and starting a career is a complex and competitive process. Having a professional coach who knows you, knows the process, and can help you do your best is a distinct advantage. Many college students have had prior experience with paid sports coaches, academic tutors, theater or music instructors, test prep programs, college counselors, etc. Hiring a career coach is no different, i.e., engaging with someone who will focus specifically on you and teach the skills you need to launch your professional career.

Isn’t this exactly what my college career office is supposed to do?

Generally, college career offices work to help students find jobs after graduation. And we encourage our clients to gain as much assistance and insight as they can through these resources. However, given the number of graduating seniors, interviewing juniors and internship-seeking sophomores they need to serve, they simply don’t have the time and resources to dig into your specific situation, needs, skills, etc. in an ongoing and holistic way. It's simply not possible for them to offer their students the one-on-one advisory services we provide.

Where are you located? Do you have coaches in my area?

We work with clients from all over the country. Because we meet via Zoom and are flexible around work hours, we don’t focus on a particular geography. We’re here to help clients wherever they are!

What—exactly—would you do for me?

For our core launch program we’ll assign a Launch Coach. They’ll go through an intake process to learn about your skills, concerns, preferences, and current job search status. The process is customized based on what we learn during intake, but typically involves 6 one-on-one sessions spent:

- Teaching core job search skills and concepts
- Helping you target jobs and companies based on your goals and skills
- Reviewing and refining your resume and LinkedIn profile
- Teaching and practicing networking techniques
- Conducting interview practice sessions
- Providing customized examples of letters, emails, elevator pitches, etc.
- Tracking progress milestones with weekly dashboards and job search tracking tools
- Offering advice and encouragement throughout the process.

We also have options for more focused one and two meeting sessions focused on specific components of the job search.

Do you deal with graduates? College Sophomores? Non-Graduates?

The focus of our program is people at the early stages of their career. Our program has benefits for college sophomores looking for an internship and recent Ph.D.’s looking for their first job.

Of course, you don’t need to have a degree to work with us. Job search skills are useful to many kinds of people in many kinds of fields—we’re simply interested in helping newer professionals launch their careers.

I don’t know what I want to do for a career—can you help me?

First, let’s acknowledge that few recent grads have a clear idea about what they want todo for work. While we would never tell them WHAT they should do, part of our customized program is to help them explore their own preferences and skills so they can better focus their job search.

What do you cost?

Our one-on-one coaching programs range from about $300 for a single session of discussing your status and next steps to a $2750 for a coordinated program around the entire job search process. Of course, it’s entirely free to call and have an initial consultation about your situation and how we can help.

I’ve got this job search thing pretty locked-in but could use some interview practice. Do you have this type of option?

Yes, we offer one and two meeting sessions focused on specific aspects of the job search, including interview prep.

I just graduated from a PhD program but have never had a “real job”. Can you help me?

Absolutely! We talk about recent grads in our marketing material but anyone can benefit from our tools and techniques. We’re happy to talk with you about your plans and our process.

Can you guarantee I’ll get a job through your program?

No. However, without a process, appropriate tools, and an intentional focus. We can virtually guarantee you won’t get a job. And, the skills we teach you today will help you in your second, third, and fourth job searches!

Do you send a report to my parents about how I’m performing in the program?

The person we are working directly with is the client regardless of who pays. That said, we provide you with a weekly milestone dashboard and a recording of our training session that you certainly can provide to your parents if you choose.

I’m very nervous about networking. Can you help?

This is totally normal! Most people don’t like the idea of meeting a complete stranger and asking for advice—but, like you, we believe networking is important so we’ve created a process that teaches the necessary skills.

We explain why it’s important and break the networking process down into smaller—less intimidating tasks. Along the way, we offer real-world tips from interviews we’ve conducted with recently launched new professionals. We offer tools and practice sessions so our clients can get comfortable with each component of the process. We’re here to help!

Are you recruiters and do you offer job-listings?

No, we aren’t recruiters, and we won’t comb job boards on behalf of our clients. We teach job search skills that will help emerging professionals throughout their careers—this may include dealing with recruiters and what to look for in job listings but we don’t place our clients in jobs (if we could snap our fingers and do this, our services would be a LOT more expensive!)

Why does my graduate or near-graduate need a career coach?

Maybe they don’t—and that’s great. But, many new and emerging professionals have
told us they need help with the transition from college to the working world. They’re
struggling with the skills to get that first “springboard" job and/or internship.

Some lack organizational skills to manage the job/internship hunting process.
Many tell us they feel paralyzed without a defined path and are just sending their
resumes into online job postings.

The hiring environment has become more competitive in the past 18-24 months.
Increasingly, internships are a critical step to set students up for the future but
they are competitive and many students don’t know how to go about getting them
or turning them into job offers

Most students spent a significant portion of their formative years experiencing
some form of pandemic lockdown. For many, this impacted work and internship
learning opportunities, along with social and mental health challenges. Many of
these students need enhanced supports as they enter the next phase of their
lives.

We’re here to help.

My student’s college offers career counseling services—why do they need your services?

First, we encourage all our clients to make the most out of any and all resources
available through their college career counseling offices. But, throughout the
dozens of interviews we conducted with job seekers and newly launched young
professionals from colleges and universities across the country, we learned that
few found these services to be particularly sefulto their job search.

The fact is, most college counseling offices have group resources—job fairs,
career boards, volunteer mentors, example resumes, etc.—which are great. But,
students told us they see more value in one-on-one coaching tailored to the their
specific skills, needs and the current realities of the job market.

How does you your program differ from other coaching programs?

First, our focus. Most career coaching services are tailored to mid-career or executives. Few target young adults just entering the workforce. We believe that teaching job search, organizational and interview skills to people in the early stage of their careers pays dividends throughout the entirety of their professional lives.

Our clear focus lets us hone in on the specific needs and challenges of recent and
soon-to-be college graduates.

Second, our coaches. Many career coaching services provide coaches who
are…professional coaches or HR managers…which works for many purposes.
In our case, our coaches have been high level executives who have personally
interviewed, hired, and fired many hundreds of people over the course of years. We believe decision-makers with real world experience offer important insights to our clients about what impresses decision-makers. In addition, every coach has real-life experience mentoring new graduates and most are also parents.
Our coaches make the difference.

Third, our process. We interviewed a wide range of graduates and near graduates from all over the country—big schools and small; a variety of majors; and a variety of skills and personal challenges. We discussed what worked for their job search—and what didn’t. We built a process around what we learned and continue to tweak it as we gather more insight and learn more.

Our process gives our clients a road map.

Can you guarantee my graduate will get a job?

No. However, without a process, appropriate tools, and an intentional focus we can
virtually guarantee they won’t get a job. Unless you want to hire them for your own
company…in which case, wouldn’t it be great if they had at least a few of the skills we teach?

We just paid for years of college tuition—this seems like a large expense

We get it. We’ve been there. It’s terrible to watch your graduate struggle after you’ve invested so much. At the same time, if you think about the investment you’ve made to date in school, sports, college, test prep, college prep, counseling, etc., high quality career counseling is an important step to launch your graduate’s professional career and economic independence.

Can I track my graduate’s progress in this program?

Our clients are adults and emerging professionals. We provide them with a weekly
progress dashboard. They can choose to share it with you if that’s their decision. However, you will have access to our newsletter that will offer insights into emerging trends, observations and tips.

Are there particular “types” of students you work with—ex. Specific majors or regions of the country?

No. If the client has worked their way through school and is committed to finding a job, we’re happy to work with them. Our coaches have successfully guided (and parented) people who have a wide variety of backgrounds, interests and challenges. The program focuses on helping emerging young professionals understand and articulate the value they bring to a potential employer regardless of school or major.

My daughter goes to school in Boston, but we live in Seattle. How do you deliver services?

All one-on-one coaching services are conducted via Zoom—allowing us to meet with students around the country—and sometimes around the world. There’s no additional cost for your student to use the technology and this approach offers flexibility for students travelling or with tight schedules. For sponsored group sessions, we can be available for in-person sessions.

My young adult has no idea what type of job they want. Can you help them?

First, let’s acknowledge that few recent grads have a clear idea about what they want to do for work. While we would never tell them WHAT they should do, part of our customized program is to help them explore their own preferences and skills so they can better focus their job search.

My son is painfully shy and is very nervous about networking.

My child is a college junior. Is it too early to start your program?

Not at all. Our techniques are helpful for anyone who wants to begin networking and preparing for internships. In fact we have an abbreviated “Tune Up” program specifically geared towards students in search of internships.

We also work with graduate students and people who are still wanting to hone their job search skills for several years post-graduation.

Are you recruiters and do you offer job-listings?

No, we aren’t recruiters and we won’t comb job boards on behalf of our clients. We teach job search skills that will help emerging professionals throughout their careers—this may include dealing with recruiters and what to look for in job listings but we don’t place our clients in jobs (if we could snap our fingers and do this, our services would be a LOT more expensive!)
